Cox, Wootton, Lerner, Griffin & Hansen, LLP, is growing to meet our clients’ needs and business expansion.  With offices in California and Hawaii, CWL provides a wide range of litigation and transactional services, which now expand and go beyond our traditional transportation-focused practice areas. At its core, CWL is unique in that each of its lawyers are trained in maritime law and provide 24/7 oil spill and marine casualty response.  CWL is currently the largest all-maritime law firm on the U.S. West Coast.

We are pleased to announce the addition of the following lawyers, who bring their unique experience and backgrounds to serve CWL’s clients and their underwriters:

Chris Tribolet joined CWL in San Francisco with a passion for maritime law.   Following more than 20 years of active duty in the United States Coast Guard, Chris brings a wealth of experience to the firm.  His early Coast Guard career included time at sea, as well as assignments in vessel inspections, investigations and pollution response.  Later, as a Coast Guard lawyer, he worked on operations law (“law of the sea,” criminal law, and regulatory matters), as well as personnel matters, mishap investigations, contracts, and environmental compliance.  He prosecuted numerous “suspension and revocation” cases, Coast Guard courts-martial and served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the COSCO BUSAN allision and oil spill.   Later, Chris was the chief of the law faculty at the Coast Guard Academy, Connecticut.  In his final Coast Guard assignment, Chris served as the primary attorney for all Coast Guard bases in the Western United States.   Chris is admitted to all California courts, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court.  He is a proctor member of the Maritime Law Association of the United States.  Email: .

Shane Kolding joins CWL as an Associate in San Francisco after serving as a Legal Research Attorney at San Francisco Superior Court, where he conducted research and ex parte hearings for judges.  Shane went to law school at the University of California – Hastings, graduating cum laude in 2016.  During his time at Hastings, he interned with the Litigation Team of the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office as well as the Misdemeanor’s Unit of the Criminal Division of the US Attorney’s Office.  Prior to law school, Shane earned his undergraduate degree from Gonzaga University.  He then served four years in the U.S. Army, holding positions as a Platoon Leader and a Company Executive Officer.  He was deployed to Afghanistan from 2010-2011. Emily A. Gaskin joined CWL as an Associate in Honolulu. Prior to joining CWL, Emily worked for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for ten years.  At NOAA Ms. Gaskin conducted economic valuation assessments of marine resources and prepared environmental impact statements for multi-use areas throughout the Pacific.  She graduated cum laude from the University of Hawaii’s William S. Richardson School of Law with a Certification in Environmental Law.  As a law student, Emily was awarded the Jarman Fellowship for her contributions to the field of environmental law, and the Linnel Nishioka-HECO Writing Award.   During law school, she was a staff writer for the Asian-Pacific Law & Policy Journal, competed on the National Environmental Law Moot Court Team, and externed with NOAA’s Office of General Counsel and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.  Emily received her undergraduate degree from UCLA, and holds Masters degrees from the University of London and Columbia University.  Emily acquired a passion for scuba diving during her travel and study abroad.  Since returning to her home state of Hawaii, she has taken up sailing and looks forward to spending more time above the water.  Email: .
